Volkswagen Taos
Volkswagen just unveiled their brand new compact SUV, the Volkswagen Taos! In the US, and we know this rings true for our customers here in Greeley, Colorado, over half of VW buyers chose an SUV. That’s up from just 14% SUV buyers in 2016. Volkswagen has heard us, releasing two new small SUVs in the past two weeks! First we saw the 100% electric ID.4 and now we have the Taos, which we expect to arrive during the summer of 2021.
The Volkswagen Taos will be the smallest and least expensive SUV in the lineup. It will be 9.3 inches shorter than the Tiguan. This puts in at the larger end of the subcompact segment or smaller end of the compact segment. It’s a nice middle ground for those who want the utility of an SUV but don’t need quite so much space. The Taos sports a similar boxy look to the Atlas. This more aggressive look sets it apart from some of the funkier looking subcompacts with which it will compete.
Interior
Despite its compact size, the Taos offers generous cargo space, with 28 cubic feet when the rear seats are in use and 66 cubit feet when those back seats are folded down. The interior looks clean, sporting a new steering wheel design with the new logo and crisp display screens. The VW digital cockpit comes standard and the center touchscreen with voice control will be available in 3 different sizes, 6.5″, 8″ or 10″ depending on trim. Wireless charging and app control are available on mid-level trims. Car-Net also comes with every Taos, enabling in-car WiFi capability.
As for the engine, we’re looking at a turbocharged 1.5 L four cylider, providing 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It will be available in front wheel drive, for those more concerned with fuel economy or VW’s impressive 4MOTION AWD variation.
Design and Tech
Outside, we have distinctive design elements that add to the rugged design of this small SUV. A personal favorite is the LED illuminated running through the center of the grille that connect the daytime running lights to the new VW logo featured in the center. The taillights in the rear have a very similar, sharp layout, connecting the design elements from front to back.
The Taos will also provide the IQ.DRIVE® suite of driver assistance technology on every model, making driving safer and less stressful. Included are Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Braking (Front Assist), Active Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist), Adaptive Cruise Control with a Stop and Go feature, Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. High Beam Control (Light Assist), the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), and Park Distance Control are also available.
The Volkswagen Taos proves that good things can come in small, expertly engineered packages! If you’re interested in the Taos, reach out to our team at Greeley Volkswagen for more information on getting yours!
